I’m fascinated with artists that play around and alter narratives. Peter Huyghe’s The Third Memory (1999) takes Sidney Lumet’s film Dog Day Afternoon, starring Al Pacino as bank robber John Wojtowicz and shows Wojtowicz himself tell the story. The piece is shown as a two-channel video, one being from Dog Day Afternoon and the other being the retelling by Wojtowicz. Huyghe is taking a real narrative that has being altered to be told visually through film to then alter this retelling by having Wojtowicz tell his version of the narrative right beside it. He is playing with narrative by showing it in different forms side by side.
